Blue-and-white isn't one blue. Different periods used different cobalt, giving different tones. Reading the tone is the first step in dating and authentication.
Note: This is about the tone features of three main cobalt types, not authentication. Final judgement needs body, glaze, painting, and mark together.
1. Three main cobalt types
Ming and Qing blue-and-white mainly used three cobalt sources, each with different tone, iron spots, and bleed.
Ming · Yongle / Xuande
Sumali cobalt
Imported, deep and rich, with iron spots.
- Tone: deep blue-black
- Iron spots: clear, sunken
- Bleed: strong
Ming · Chenghua
Pingdeng cobalt
Domestic, pale and clear, no iron spots.
- Tone: pale blue-grey
- Iron spots: none
- Bleed: slight
Late Ming · Qing
Zhe cobalt
Domestic, bright green-blue, layered.
- Tone: bright green-blue
- Iron spots: few
- Bleed: controlled
2. Comparison
| Cobalt | Tone | Iron spots | Bleed | Period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sumali | Deep blue-black | Clear, sunken | Strong | Yongle, Xuande |
| Pingdeng | Pale blue-grey | None | Slight | Chenghua |
| Zhe | Bright green-blue | Few | Controlled | Late Ming, Qing |
Tip: Deep blue + iron spots + bleed = think Yongle/Xuande. Pale + no spots = think Chenghua.
3. How to look
- Tone: overall colour in natural light — deep, pale, or bright
- Spots: loupe for iron spots and whether sunken
- Bleed: are the blue edges blurry or sharp?
- Layering: does the blue show depth variation?
4. Common misconceptions
- Deep = Yongle/Xuande — tone can be copied
- Iron spots = Sumali — spots can be faked
- Pale = Chenghua — pale can be copied
- Bluer = better — tone is a period feature, not a quality standard
