Early Ming ·
Middle Ming ·
Late Ming ·
The Ming dynasty lasted 276 years; styles shifted a lot. The first step in dating is not reading the mark, but placing the piece into Early, Middle, or Late Ming. Here's a timeline of the key features.
Note: This is about period-level features, not authentication. Final judgement needs body, glaze, painting, mark, and provenance.
Timeline of three phases
Early Ming
Hongwu → Yongle → Xuande
1368 — 1435 · ~67 years
- Cobalt: Sumali, deep, with iron spots
- Glaze: thick, orange-peel texture
- Body: heavier, white, fine
- Forms: mostly large — cups, flasks, monk's-cap jugs
- Marks: rare in Yongle, common in Xuande
Middle Ming
Chenghua → Hongzhi → Zhengde
1465 — 1521 · ~56 years
- Cobalt: Pingdeng, pale and clear
- Glaze: thin, warm, jade-like
- Body: light, thinnest in Chenghua
- Forms: mostly small — chicken cups, stem cups
- Marks: Chenghua in neat regular script, square frame
Late Ming
Jiajing → Wanli → Tianqi → Chongzhen
1522 — 1644 · ~122 years
- Cobalt: Zhe, bright green-blue, layered
- Glaze: thinner, sometimes crackled
- Body: varied; folk wares often with impurities
- Forms: large pieces, Daoist themes
- Marks: common in Jiajing/Wanli, rare in Tianqi/Chongzhen
Phase comparison
| Feature | Early | Middle | Late |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cobalt | Sumali | Pingdeng | Zhe |
| Tone | Rich, spots | Pale, clear | Bright, layered |
| Body | Heavy, white | Light, fine | Varied |
| Glaze | Thick, orange peel | Thin, warm | Thin, cracked |
| Forms | Large | Small | Large, Daoist |
Tip: Place the piece in Early / Middle / Late first; then narrow to a reign. This beats jumping straight to the mark.
How to look
- Cobalt: rich or pale — the first clue
- Body: heavy vs. light, coarse vs. fine
- Glaze: thick orange-peel = Early; thin and warm = Middle
- Mark: a helper, not the first call
Common misconceptions
- Xuande mark = Xuande — many later copies
- Rich blue = Early Ming — tone can be copied
- Thin body = Chenghua — thin alone isn't enough
- Mark is everything — it's only a clue
