Many first-timers see crackle on porcelain and assume it is damage. In fact crackle is not a flaw by definition — it is a key clue for dating and authentication.
1. What is crackle?
Crackle is fine lines in the glaze layer, formed by different shrinkage rates between glaze and body during firing and cooling. It is a glaze crack, not a body crack.
Ru, Guan, and Ge wares of the Song dynasty treated crackle as an aesthetic. From Ming onward, it also became a diagnostic clue.
2. Natural crackle
- Direction: main and secondary lines, nested
- Depth: layered, uneven
- Colour: seepage into the lines over time
- Edges: faint yellow or grey, natural ageing
In the hand, natural crackle feels "alive" — like ice cracks or tree roots.
3. Forced crackle
- Rapid cooling after firing
- Chemical treatment with acid or alkali
- Physical shock to the glaze
Forced crackle looks even, rigid, often grid-like; colour sits on the surface; no natural ageing at the edges.
4. What to look at
| Point | Natural | Forced |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Nested, main & secondary | Even grid |
| Depth | Layered | Surface only |
| Colour | Seepage, gradient | Pigment, flat |
| Feel | No sharp grooves | Sometimes grooved |
| Overall | Like ice or roots | Like a net or grid |
5. Crackle and dating
Ru: fine and shallow. Ge: "gold wire and iron thread", nested. Ming–Qing folk kiln: usually shallow. Late Qing–Republic imitations: forced and rigid.
Crackle alone cannot date a piece, but it helps you judge whether the glaze is "normal" and filter out obvious mismatches.
