Bronze censers are an interesting local category — functional, decorative, and ritual. Patina and surface are key clues to period and authenticity.

Note: This is about reading a censer, not authentication. Combine alloy, casting marks, surface, weight, and inscription.

1. Alloy

  • Ming Xuande: fine "wind-milled" copper, substantial in hand
  • Qing official: refined, yellow-toned, neat workmanship
  • Qing folk: coarser alloy, lighter
  • Late Qing–Republic fakes: thin, light, sharp sound

2. Casting marks

  • Interior: old leaves natural casting marks; fakes often polished smooth
  • Feet: old filing is directional; fakes look rigid
  • Handles: old lines flow; fakes show casting seams

3. Surface and patina

Natural

  • Glows from within
  • Uneven depth, with use wear
  • Smooth to the touch
  • Varies with light

Faked

  • Sits on the surface, rigid
  • Too uniform, flat
  • Dry, chemical feel
  • Often a sharp smell

4. Weight and sound

Same size — old tends heavier. Tap lightly:

  • Old: deep, sustained
  • Fake: sharp, short

Note: repairs or lead content can alter the sound. Tap gently.

5. Inscriptions

  • Script matching period and maker
  • Position responsive to structure
  • Method — cast or engraved, original or later
  • Depth — cast has natural recess; engraved shows tool marks

6. Summary

Point Old Fake
AlloyFine, substantialThin, light
CastingNatural, directionalRigid or forced
SurfaceFrom withinOn the surface
SoundDeep, sustainedSharp, short
InscriptionNatural recessTool marks
Tip: Real patina is formed by years of use and oxidation. It cannot be rushed. Too uniform, too bright, too cheap — suspect.
