For dating furniture, the most reliable clue isn't appearance — it's joinery. Appearance can be faked; joinery is very hard to fully replicate. Here are four common joints.

Note: This is basic dating logic, not authentication. High-end fakes need wood, patina, and carving checked together.

1. Four common joints

Different eras and parts use different joints. The refinement and complexity of joinery reflect craft level and period style.

Ming · Qing · Republic

Dovetail joint

Shaped like a dovetail — pulls tighter under stress. Ming dovetails are fine and concealed; Qing are thicker and exposed. Refinement tells the period.

Ming · Qing

Shouldered joint

Used for table tops and chair frames. Ming joints are neat and tight; Qing are thicker and broader. Seam tightness tells the period.

Ming · Qing

Corner joint

Three square members meet at a corner, shaped like a rice-dumpling corner. Ming pieces are neat; Qing pieces more decorative. Equal division tells the period.

Qing · Republic

Sliding joint

A detachable joint, common in modular furniture. Qing and Republic pieces use it; Ming rarely. Presence of sliding joints tells the period.

2. Comparison

Joint Period Feature Clue
DovetailMing, Qing, RepublicTightens under stressMing fine, Qing thick
ShoulderedMing, QingFrame connectionMing tight, Qing broad
CornerMing, QingThree-way cornerMing equal, Qing decorative
SlidingQing, RepublicDetachableRare in Ming, common later
Tip: Joinery is "internal evidence". Appearance can be redone, but joint refinement, materials, and cutting method are hard to fully disguise.

3. How to look

  1. Seams: tight or gapped?
  2. Craft: fine or rough? Ming or Qing style?
  3. Materials: consistent or replaced?
  4. Structure: signs of disassembly or sliding joints?

4. Common misconceptions

  • Correct joint = old — joints can be redone
  • Ming joinery always finer — depends on the piece
  • Sliding joint = Qing — Republic also common
  • Joinery alone dates it — combine with wood and patina
