Old amber is not judged by darkness of colour alone. Many newcomers assume darker and redder means older — which is exactly why baked amber is common.

Note: This is about telling natural oxidation from baking, not authentication. Final judgement needs hand feel, lighting, and provenance.

1. How natural oxidation happens

Decades of wearing and storing gradually oxidise the surface. The process is slow, moving inward over time.

  • Colour: dark outside, lighter inside, with local variation
  • Flow lines: natural, layer-by-layer
  • Shine: soft, inward, like a thin oil film
  • Feel: smooth, with the weight of patina

2. How baked amber is made

New amber is heated in ovens to darken the colour. Under the national standard this is an "enhancement" — legally labelled "amber", but not to be sold as "old amber".

  • Colour: uniform, no gradient
  • Flow lines: often stiff or blurred
  • Shine: dry, dull
  • Feel: dry, light

3. Four checks

Point Natural Baked
ColourGradualUniform
Flow linesNaturalStiff or blurred
ShineSoftDry, dull
FeelSmooth, weightyDry, light
Tip: Dark + stiff flow lines + dry shine = suspect baked.

4. How to look

  1. Overall: in natural light, look for colour layering
  2. Flow lines: raking torch light from the side
  3. Shine: reflection tells soft (natural) from hard (baked)
  4. Feel: handle it — natural feels warm and dense

5. Common misconceptions

  • Redder = older — usually baked
  • Smells = natural — scent can be added
  • Lighter = older — could just be lower density
  • "Ice crack" = old — can be forced
