"Jianlou" — bargain hunting — is a much-used, much-misunderstood term in Singapore's antiques circles. Many think it means luck: finding a seller who does not know what they have.
Real bargain hunting is not gambling — it is knowing one step more than the other side.
Logic 1: Information gap
A small local auction lists a Qing bowl as "Republic-era copy", starting at S$80. You read the glaze and foot, judge it Kangxi, win it at S$120 — worth S$600 elsewhere.
Logic 2: Time gap
Estate clearances, house moves, cash-flow sales. Sellers are not ignorant — they are short on time. Whoever can close on the spot at a fair-but-low price often wins.
Logic 3: Knowledge gap
The hardest to copy. It is not just knowing a price, but seeing value others miss — period, craft, condition, market. It takes years.
Stack the three
- Knowledge + information: you can read the piece, and know where it sells
- Information + time: you know it's valuable, and can pay today
- All three: you understand it, they don't, you are less pressed
