The signature area is the most overlooked and most informative zone of a painting. Dedication, signature, leisure seals, collector seals — each carries clues to period, provenance, and authenticity.

Note: This is about reading signatures, not authentication. Read them together with the work's style, paper, and ink.

1. Dedication and signature

  • Dedication: the recipient, or the commissioning party's name and style name
  • Signature: the artist's name, date, place

Check:

  • Script: whether dedication and signature are consistent in style and size
  • Spacing: whether the gap between them feels natural
  • Ink: whether it matches the ink used on the painting itself
  • Date: whether the cyclical year fits the artist's active period

2. Leisure seals

Leisure seals express the artist's mood, identity, and aspirations. Common types:

  • Name seals — given name, courtesy name, pseudonym
  • Studio seals — study or workshop name
  • Leisure seals — poems, idioms, statements of taste
  • Dated seals — specific years or ages

The same artist's seals evolve over time. A full seal genealogy is one of the strongest tools for dating a work.

3. Collector seals

Seals left by past collectors, connoisseurs, and institutions are key evidence of provenance.

But they are also heavily faked. What to check:

  • Seal paste colour — old paste is muted and deep; new paste is bright and saturated
  • Impression clarity — genuine impressions are clear and natural; fakes are blurred or too crisp
  • Position — how seals relate to the image and inscription
  • Size — proportional to the work overall
  • Sequence — whether the chronological order of multiple seals makes sense

4. Signature and dating

Signatures are one of the key dating signals. For example:

  • Ming: reign titles, concise inscriptions
  • Qing: rich inscriptions, "to Mr so-and-so" dedications
  • Republic: cyclical years mixed with Western dates
  • Modern imitations: Qing reign titles paired with modern phrasing

5. Visual checks at a glance

Point Natural Suspect
InkMatches the imageMismatched
Seal pasteMuted, deepBright, saturated
ScriptFits the artist's styleOff-style
ImpressionCrisp, naturalBlurred or too crisp
PositionResponsive to the imageForced, awkward
Tip: The signature area is a favourite zone for faking. Mismatched ink, bright-as-new seal paste, rigid seal layout — suspect.

What you can do next

  • Study the seal genealogy of one painter you like
  • Build your own reference library of signatures — photograph both genuine and fake examples
  • For any high-value painting, examine the signature area under a loupe, repeatedly
