New collectors often ask: can you roughly date a blue-and-white bowl without thermoluminescence?

Yes. For Qing folk kiln blue-and-white, three basics — glaze, body, pigment tone — can place most common pieces in a reasonable time range.

Note: This is about dating intuition, not authentication. Folk kiln wares survive in large numbers, and copies are common; no single feature is decisive.

1. Glaze: bright or soft?

  • Shunzhi–early Kangxi: bluish-white, thicker, harder sheen.
  • Mid–late Kangxi: softer, known as "tight skin, bright glaze".
  • Yongzheng–Qianlong: finer and whiter.
  • Jiaqing onward: thinner glaze, weaker sheen, sometimes "wave glaze".

2. Body: read the exposed foot

Kangxi folk kiln bodies are finely washed, with exposed clay white and slightly rice-like; after Qianlong, some bodies contain more impurities. Kangxi often shows a two-tier foot and eel-back; late Qing often has a flat base and slanted-cut foot.

3. Pigment tone: the blue tells time

  • Kangxi: crisp blue, layered, with "five shades of ink" shading.
  • Yongzheng–Qianlong: softer and stable, grey-blue.
  • Jiaqing–Daoguang: more obvious grey, some floating colour.
  • Late Qing–Republic: "foreign blue", bright and thin, purplish.
Tip: Rich layered shading and deep, settled blue point to Kangxi / Yongzheng; bright purplish blue with flat wash points to late Qing / Republic.

Combine all three

Soft glaze + two-tier foot + layered cobalt → mid–late Kangxi to Yongzheng. Thin whitish glaze + slanted foot + purplish blue → late Qing–Republic.
