A painting's mounting isn't just decoration — it's part of the work. Original mounting preserves authenticity and value; re-mounting damages both. Here's a layer-by-layer breakdown.

Note: This is about basic differences, not authentication. Final judgement needs paper, ink, seal, and signature checked together.

1. Five layers of mounting

From inside out, a painting has five layers. Each matters.

1
Core

Painting core

The actual painted area. Paper, silk, ink, colour all here. The core is the value; the other four layers serve it.

2
Lining

Lining paper

The paper directly behind the core — the core's "life". If removed, the core is damaged. An intact lining is key to integrity.

3
Backing

Backing paper

Reinforcement behind the lining, usually two or three layers. Fixes the core, resists moisture and insects. Original backing is a key sign of original mounting.

4
Border

Border materials

Silk or damask borders around the core. Colour, material, and style reflect the period. Original borders usually match the core's period.

5
Rods

Top rod, bottom roller, knobs

Outer hanging rod, rolling rod, and end knobs. Original rods and knobs are usually well made.

2. Original vs re-mounted

Original Authentic

  • Lining: intact, bonded to core
  • Backing: original, naturally aged
  • Border: matches core's period
  • Rods: well made, patinated
  • Value: preserves authenticity and value

Re-mounted Damages

  • Lining: removed, core thinned
  • Backing: replaced, no ageing
  • Border: possibly new, mismatched
  • Rods: possibly replaced, no patina
  • Value: damages painting and price

3. Comparison

Feature Original Re-mounted
LiningIntactRemoved
BackingOriginal, agedNew, no ageing
BorderMatches corePossibly new
RodsOriginal, patinatedPossibly replaced
PriceAdds valueReduces value
Tip: Original mounting is a plus, not just decoration. When buying, always ask whether it's original and whether it's been re-mounted.

4. How to look

  1. Lining: intact? any sign of removal?
  2. Backing: naturally aged, or new?
  3. Border: colour, material, style match the core?
  4. Rods: patinated, or replaced?
  5. Ask: any re-mounting history?

5. Common misconceptions

  • Fresh mounting = good — fresh may mean re-mounted
  • Re-mounting = restoration — it damages; not all paintings should be re-mounted
  • Original = old — original isn't necessarily old; integrity is what matters
  • Just look at the painting — mounting is part of the work
