When a painting develops mould, insect damage, or yellowing, the first instinct is often to "wipe it", "sun it", or "wash it". All three usually turn a repairable problem into an irreversible one. Here is the correct four-step first aid.

Note: This article is for educational reference only. Mould treatment, insect damage, and re-mounting must be carried out by professional painting conservators.

Three things you must NOT do

  • Do not wash: water spreads mould, dissolves pigments, and deforms paper
  • Do not wipe: wiping pushes mould into paper fibres and damages the painting
  • Do not sun: UV embrittles paper and fades pigments — irreversible
Remember: every step in painting conservation is irreversible. When unsure, the best action is to do nothing.

Step 1: Isolate

Mould and insects spread. As soon as you notice a problem, separate the affected piece from the rest of the collection.

  • Place in an acid-free bag or box
  • Keep away from other paintings, paper, and textiles
  • Do not seal in ordinary plastic bags (traps moisture)

Step 2: Stabilise humidity

Mould grows fastest in high humidity. Stabilise the environment first — do not try to "dry" it with a hairdryer or heater.

  • Cool, ventilated, dark location
  • Relative humidity 45–55%
  • No hairdryer, no direct heater airflow

Step 3: Record

Photos of the current condition are crucial for later assessment, and for future sale or insurance.

  • Overall shot, detail shot, close-up of mould or insect holes
  • Record discovery date, environment, previous storage location
  • Do not dismount the mounting; do not touch the painting surface

Step 4: Refer

Painting conservation — especially re-mounting, mould treatment, and paper infill — requires expertise and equipment. Do not rely on "online methods".

  • Contact a conservator with painting experience
  • Confirm in advance: reversibility, effect on original mounting, effect on future resale
  • Compare 2–3 proposals and quotes before deciding
Bottom line: First aid is not about "fixing" — it is about limiting damage. Isolate, stabilise, record, refer.

Prevention matters more than first aid

  • Control humidity; avoid long-term high humidity
  • Store away from light; avoid UV
  • Use acid-free paper and boxes; never ordinary plastic bags
  • Check regularly — early detection saves pieces

What to do next

  • Check storage conditions for every painting: humidity, light, packaging
  • Create a simple record: dimensions, source, mounting state, inspection log
  • Isolate and record first, then consult a professional
