The real risk in shipping antiques is not distance — it is poor packing. A Qianlong bowl sent from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur may be handled five or more times. Here is the 8-layer method used by local collectors and auction houses.
Layer 1: Acid-free paper around the object
Wrap the object first in acid-free or conservation tissue, to keep it from contacting other materials. Especially important for paintings and paper.
Layer 2: Bubble wrap (bubbles outward)
Bubbles face out, smooth side against the object. This cushions without leaving bubble marks on the surface.
Layer 3: Foam corner protection
Corners, rims, and handles — the weakest points — get foam or EPE reinforcement to prevent localised pressure.
Layer 4: Suspension packing
Suspend the wrapped object in the centre of the box, with buffer space all around. This is the core logic of professional art logistics.
Layer 5: Inner box
First rigid box, usually corrugated. The object should not move at all inside.
Layer 6: Outer box
Second rigid box, 5–10 cm larger, with cushioning material between. Double-boxing absorbs in-transit shock.
Layer 7: Shock and orientation labels
Mark "Fragile", "This way up", "Do not crush" on the outside, with directional arrows. Also add an "open here" mark on top so the receiver does not open the wrong side.
Layer 8: Evidence
The most overlooked and most important layer. Photograph or video the whole packing process:
- The object's condition (multiple angles)
- Each packing step
- The final sealed box
- Tracking number, insured value, recipient details
Material-specific reminders
- Porcelain: rim, foot, and handles are stress points — reinforce
- Paintings: rolled is better than flat; avoid creases and compression
- Wood: avoid high humidity; add desiccant for long routes
- Bronze: avoid acidic materials; wrap separately
- Jade: small pieces get lost — use a hard case inside the larger box
Common misconceptions
- Newspaper around porcelain — ink contaminates the object
- One layer of bubble wrap is enough — cushioning is far from enough
- It can move inside the box — this is the main cause of breakage
- No photo record — no basis for a claim
What to do next
- Prepare: acid-free paper, bubble wrap, foam board, double boxes, filler
- For important objects, use professional art logistics, not ordinary couriers
- Record the whole packing process on video as evidence
